Job Summary

We are seeking a quality or industrial engineering professional with hands-on experience in metal fabrication, welding inspection, metal stamping, and laser cutting. This role will evaluate supplier manufacturing capabilities, establish quality requirements, and drive process improvements to ensure fabricated metal parts and assemblies meet engineering specifications and customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and qualify suppliers for metal fabrication processes, including welding, stamping, laser cutting, forming, and assembly.
  • Conduct supplier process audits to evaluate manufacturing controls, equipment capabilities, inspection methods, and quality systems.
  • Review engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), material specifications, and customer requirements to identify critical dimensions, features, and functions.
  • Inspect welded assemblies for dimensional accuracy, workmanship, weld discontinuities, and conformance to applicable drawings and acceptance criteria.
  • Evaluate stamping processes for dimensional consistency, tooling condition, burr control, cracking, springback, and surface defects.
  • Assess laser cutting processes for cut accuracy, edge quality, dross, distortion, and repeatability.
  • Develop and review inspection plans, control plans, process flow diagrams, and process failure mode and effects analyses (PFMEAs).
  • Support new product introduction, first article inspections, and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submissions.
  • Verify material composition, mechanical properties, traceability, and supporting material certifications.
  • Evaluate paint, coating, plating, and surface finish requirements, including appearance and thickness criteria.
  • Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions using methods such as 8D, 5 Whys, and fishbone analysis.
  • Partner with sourcing, engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers to improve quality, process capability, yield, and delivery performance.
  • Track supplier performance and verify the effectiveness of corrective actions and development plans.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quality Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • At least three years of relevant quality, manufacturing, industrial engineering, or supplier quality experience in metal fabrication.
  • Practical experience with welding inspection, metal stamping, and laser cutting.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, weld symbols, and technical specifications.
  • Experience using dimensional inspection equipment, such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
  • Working knowledge of quality management systems, statistical process control (SPC), measurement system analysis (MSA), and process capability analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work across functions and directly with suppliers to resolve manufacturing and quality issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Six Sigma certification, or equivalent credentials.
  • Experience with MIG, TIG, resistance, or robotic welding processes.
  • Familiarity with applicable AWS welding codes and nondestructive testing methods.
  • Experience with large metal enclosures, cabinets, racks, chassis, or other complex fabricated assemblies.
  • Experience leading supplier qualification, supplier development, and manufacturing readiness reviews.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, tooling and fixture validation, and design for manufacturability.
