JOB SUMMARY

As a Server/Storage DC/DC Sr. Power Engineer, you will own the end-to-end power delivery architecture and design for high-performance server systems, spanning from project kick-off to mass production. You will serve hyperscale/enterprise customers and deliver robust, high-efficiency, and high-density power solutions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Technical Engagement: Serve as the primary power technical counterpart for server clients (OEM/ODM/Hyperscalers); participate in weekly technical reviews to track design status, resolve alignment issues, and manage deliverables.
  • System Power Architecture: Collaborate with project leads, and system architects to define server-level power delivery architectures (e.g., 12V/48V DC bus, CRPS infrastructure).
  • Topology & Budget Analysis: Analyze complex server power budgets to construct detailed power block diagrams and select optimal topologies (Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost, Isolated DC-DC).
  • High-Power Subsystem Design: Own the design of server power subsystems, including high-current Multi-phase CPU/GPU Core VRMs (Intel VR14/AMD SVI3 specs), DC-DC POL converters, Hot-swap/E-fuse control, AC/DC CRPS Oring/Current sharing circuits, Telemetry/Digital Power Management (PMBus/I2C/SVID), EMI filtering, and Super-capacitor/BBU (Battery Backup Unit) management.
  • Supplier & Component Management: Partner with tier-1 vendors to evaluate and select critical components (Controllers, Power Stages/DrMOS, Inductors, Low-ESR Capacitors, High-current Connectors, Busbars) balancing efficiency (80 Plus Titanium standards), thermal performance, cost, and form factor.
  • Schematic Capture & Simulation: Utilize CAD tools (OrCAD Capture / LTspice) to generate schematics and perform rigorous power integrity (PI) simulations and loop stability calculations to guarantee transient response and reliability.
  • Layout Guidance: Establish strict power-specific layout guidelines for high-current paths and work closely with Layout Engineers on component placement, thermal dissipation, and critical power-path routing reviews.
  • Board Bring-Up: Collaboratively drive initial server motherboard/baseboard bring-up and firmware debugging (BMC/PMBus integration) alongside Electrical (EE) and Firmware (FW) Engineers.
  • Server Test Planning: Develop comprehensive DC-DC test plans incorporating generic industry standards, OCP (Open Compute Project) specs, and custom client specifications (Full validation for EVT; Regression/Stress testing for DVT).
  • Hands-on Verification: Execute test plans (including dynamic load transient, efficiency profiling, ripple/noise, and thermal stress), analyze data, and author official power validation test reports.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Spearhead troubleshooting and failure analysis for power defects, implementing required ECOs (Engineering Change Orders) into DVT schematics and board files.
  • Second-Source Qualification: Review and validate second-source components recommended by Component Engineers; execute qualification test plans to ensure server-grade reliability.
  • NPI & Manufacturing Support: Provide technical support to the manufacturing and factory teams to resolve power-related issues during server pilot runs and mass production.
  • RMA Failure Analysis: Support sustaining engineering by performing deep-dive failure analysis (FA) on server power-related field returns (RMA).
  • Equipment Mastery: Proficient in operating advanced lab equipment for power debugging and validation, including:
    • Oscilloscopes: Competent in capturing high-speed switching waveforms, transient responses, and ripple/noise measurements.
    • DC Power Supplies & Electronic Loads: Skilled in setting up input/output conditions to simulate real-world dynamic load steps and efficiency profiling.
    • Digital Multimeters (DMM): Experienced in high-precision voltage, current, and component-level resistance measurements.
    • Frequency Response Analyzers (FRA): Proficient in measuring Bode plots to analyze loop stability, phase margin, and gain margin.
    • Intel / AMD platform Validation Tools: Hands-on experience with specialized platform validation tools (e.g., VRTT, SDLE) for CPU/DDR Voltage Regulator (VR) compliance, load-line calibration, and dynamic transient testing.

Non-Technical Knowledge & Skills

  • Communications: Proven ability to co-work cross-functional peers and institutionalize suitable hardware design.
  • Global Collaboration: Have enough English communication skills for collaborating within global teams.
  • Process Discipline: Familiarity with Stage-Gate Process Management frameworks to ensure compliance at every gate review.
  • Review Facilitation: Experience leading comprehensive cross-functional engineering and peer design reviews.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Academic Credentials: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering (BSEE/MSEE) or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • Industry Tenure: 5+ years of hands-on experience in high-complexity embedded hardware design, power electronics development, or closely related competency.
  • Equivalent Mix: An equivalent combination of advanced education, specialized training, and a demonstrable portfolio of shipped commercial products.
