Lead Firmware Engineer

Job Summary
Jabil Inc. -- of the largest global engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing services companies in the world -- is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lead Firmware Engineer, onsite in Ottawa, Ontario, to drive the design, development, and optimization of embedded firmware solutions for a variety of innovative products. This role involves technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, robust firmware across the product lifecycle.

As a Lead Firmware Engineer, you will lead the architecture, design, and implementation of firmware for new and existing products, ensuring adherence to technical specifications and industry best practices. By collaborating closely with hardware, software, and test engineering teams, you will help define requirements, integrate firmware with hardware, and support system-level validation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement robust testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, and system-level validation for firmware components.
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex firmware issues, providing timely and effective solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement in firmware development processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Mentor and guide a team of firmware engineers, fostering their professional growth and ensuring technical excellence within the team.
  • Conduct detailed design reviews, code reviews, and provide constructive feedback to team members.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, software, and test engineering teams to define requirements, integrate firmware with hardware, and support system-level validation.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in embedded systems and firmware development.
  • Participate in project planning, estimation, and risk assessment activities.
  • Document firmware designs, interfaces, and test procedures thoroughly.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in embedded firmware development, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior technical role.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems development.
  • Extensive experience with various microcontrollers (e.g., ARM Cortex-M, PIC, AVR) and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Strong understanding of communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet, and wireless protocols (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi).
  • Experience with hardware-software integration, debugging tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers), and embedded development environments.
  • Solid understanding of embedded system architecture, memory management, and power management techniques.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and issue tracking systems.
  • Experience developing embedded firmware for optical networking, fiber-optic communications, optical transceivers, photonic modules, or optoelectronic products.
  • Familiarity with optical system architecture, photonics technologies, and optical test and validation methodologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively mentor and collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies is a plus.
