Job Summary
The Mechanical Cost Estimator is responsible for analyzing engineering documentation—including technical drawings, CAD files, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)—to develop accurate part cost estimates. The role applies process- and material-based costing methodologies using industry-standard cost estimation tools to support informed design, sourcing, and business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and timely cost estimations in accordance with request specifications and project timelines.
- Perform process-based and part cost estimations using company authorized costing tool, currently we are using aPriori.
- Conduct Should-Cost analyses utilizing the Mi6 costing tool.
- Link part calculations between Mi6 and aPriori to ensure consistency and traceability of cost models.
- Estimate manufacturing costs for a range of custom-engineered components, including:
- Sheet metal parts
- Stamping (stage and progressive dies)
- Machined components
- Plastic injection-molded parts
- Associated tooling costs
- Support multiple business divisions, including close collaboration with Design and Engineering teams, to enable cost-optimized designs.
- Perform cost variance and gap analyses by comparing internal cost estimates with supplier quotations, identifying cost drivers and deltas.
- Continuously refine costing methodologies, assumptions, and tool configurations to improve estimation accuracy.
- Contribute to process improvements and best practices within the MCET function.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Knowledge Requirements
Technical & Professional Skills
- Proficiency in engineering and business software tools, including:
- SolidWorks (or other similar CAD program)
- Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
- Microsoft Project
- Visio
- Strong ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering drawings and CAD models.
- Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and cost drivers.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Ability to respond professionally to inquiries from internal requestors and stakeholders.
- Strong presentation skills, with the ability to communicate cost insights to senior management and cross-functional teams.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
Working Experience
- Experience working in a manufacturing, sourcing, or cost engineering environment.
- Exposure to supplier cost analysis and commercial negotiations.
- Strong analytical mindset with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a global team environment.
