JOB SUMMARY
Designs, fabricates, modifies, evaluates and documents assembly processes, components, and automated systems to produce or improve company products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops data and makes preliminary sketches, lay-outs and notes required to present design proposals. Researches basic design factors such as ease of manufacture and availability of materials and equipment. Works with other organizations impacted by design development.
Responsible for the design, integration, and deployment of automation systems supporting high-level assembly and integration of advanced compute and AI-based server rack products at Jabil’s Florence, KY facility. This position requires application of industrial engineering, mechatronics, robotics automation principles to develop automated manufacturing solutions that improve throughput, yield, and process stability. The role involves end-to-end system integration of automated robotics, vision system implementation, controls configuration, and automation validation.
May perform work in a specific sub-specialty such as Design, Automation, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Technical Project Management, and/or Process Improvement. Please see addendum for specific sub-specialty requirements. This description is designed to capture the general elements of Engineering work in a manufacturing setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and develops complex assembly processes, initiates process improvement initiatives for server rack assembly and integration, system level validation, and packaging as assigned.
- Support collaborative integration initiatives between Jabil and third-party automation providers for advanced server rack assembly automation.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives using Lean and data-driven methodologies to increase yield and throughput.
- Integrate machine vision systems (2D/3D cameras, OCR, barcode inspection) for automated quality validation and closed-loop feedback.
- Develops and implements changes to product design and/or the manufacturing process to achieve efficiency, quality, and/or cost improvements by participating in new product development programs.
- Develops requirement specifications, system concepts, CAD generated layouts, detailed drawings, BOM’s. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details of parts of devices, mechanisms and structures.
- Generate system requirement specifications, automation layouts, electrical schematics, and functional documentation.
- Provides customer product design engineering for economic production; may participate in meetings with customers as needed.
- Assesses proper material, automation and equipment selection.
- Works with manufacturing to troubleshoot problems, improve yield, retrofits, set-ups, methods development, and the development of process parameters.
- Participates in product development meetings and may make recommendations to product design changes to enhance manufacturing and assembly.
- Conduct proof of concept experiments and design other testing requirements as needed.
- Research new technology or development tools to remain informed of current technology.
- Understanding of Lean Six Sigma tools, projects and processes and ability to incorporate these into assigned engineering projects.
- May assume lead role in small or sub-section of large project, as assigned.
- Reviews completed projects for accuracy, clarity and completeness.
- Ensures projects are compliant with all local, regional, and national regulatory requirements, codes and controls.
- Supports all company safety and quality programs and initiatives.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Engineering Addendum
Automation:
Technical responsibility for design and development of automation requirement specification and systems concepts and installs automation and transfer automation programs to production in a smooth and timely manner.
Industrial Engineering / Process Improvement:
Apply Lean Six Sigma methodologies and industrial engineering principles for process improvement, yield optimization, and increase throughput of high-value deliverables.
CAD/CAE:
Technical responsibility for design and production of 2D and 3D representations of automated assembly layouts, procedures, products, and process improvements. May design and build prototypes as needed.
Mechanical:
Technical responsibility for a variety of engineering work in planning and design of products, processes, machines and other mechanically functioning equipment and mechanical industrial processes; oversees production, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of such equipment as needed.
Technical Project Management:
Facilitate a collaborative approach to high-level assembly and integration of advanced compute server racks for a joint-venture between Jabil and Bright Machines – to fully automate the assembly process (Bright Machines) prior to system level testing and validation (by Jabil).
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
- Understands processes and has a basic understanding of various manufacturing techniques used across Industrial Engineering, Automation, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and mechanical CAD drawings.
- Knowledge of automation safety standards and industrial machine compliance requirements.
- Strong knowledge of engineering theories, design principles and practices, and design evaluation techniques.
- Proficiency in use of personal computers, Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word and PowerPoint) and e-mail skills required.
Education:
- Minimum: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- Preferred: Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering
Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant engineering discipline; a combination of 5 total years of transferrable manufacturing experience and/or technical project management experience
- OR –
- Master’s Degree in relevant engineering discipline; a combination of 3 total years of transferrable manufacturing and/or technical project management experience
- An equivalent combination of education, training or experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
